Inkling[]
After appearing as a trophy and Mii costume in the previous games, the avatar character of the Splatoon series debuts as a playable character in Ultimate. The default appearance is based on the artwork of the female Inkling seen in the cover of the original game, as she wears orange hair, fake contacts, a white tee, and pink trainers.
She enters the stage by landing a splash of ink in squid form before transforming back into kid form and flapping her arms. This is directly based on the Inklings' entrance animation from Octo Valley in the original Splatoon.
Like all other unlockable characters, she can be unlocked by either having him join the party in World of Light, playing enough VS matches, or clearing Classic mode with specific characters. Specifically, Inkling is the 5th character unlocked playing VS Matches, and the first in Samus' Classic Mode unlock tree.
Gameplay-wise, Inkling's attacks revolves around melee attacks and splattering opponents with ink via weapons (other than Final Smash). The ink mechanic in this game is heavily inspired by how it is used in the Splatoon games. Damage output constantly increases by up to 50% more when the opponent gets their body covered more in ink by at up to 60%. However, the ink disappears gradually, as it will completely disappear 5-20 seconds depending on the amount of the ink the opponent is covered in while also assuming no more ink is splattered in between those timeframes. This makes splattering opponents with ink more often raising the time of increased output, including maximum output when being covered in at least 60% of ink. However, the Inkling does not have an unlimited amount of ink and has to refuel. She has an Ink Tank that is shown near her damage meter that ranges vertically (unlike Cloud's Limit Gauge or Little Mac's Power Meter). The ink depletes the more she uses until it's completely gone. The Inkling can refuel by being KO'd, or by holding the smash button when the tank is empty (as shown by the red X in the tank) or while shielding.
Besides the ink mechanic, she features different references to the Splatoon series. Some of the most noticeable are her smash attacks using different weapons in the game. Her forward smash uses the Inkbrush, her up smash uses the Blaster, and the down smash uses the Slosher. Another noticeable is her dash having her transform into a squid. This is based on the mechanic in Splatoon games where they become squids to swim in their ink quickly. The Inkling also takes damage when swimming in the water, likely a reference that their bodies dissolve when contacting water.
Special moves:
- Neutral Special - Splattershot: Inkling begins firing ink projectiles out of the Splattershot for a medium distance, with the shots arcing downward. However, she cannot move when firing. The specific weapon is based on the iconic midrange weapon of the Shooter class in Splatoon games, with the design based on its appearance from the original game. It has also been used for her neutral infinite attack, forward throw, and floor attacks to deal more damage and splatter in ink.
- Side Special - Splat Roller: Inkling takes out the weapon and rolls it across the field, leaving a trail of ink that lasts for five seconds which can slow down enemies. Enemies hit by the roller on the ground will be buried for a short while. The weapon is based on a Roller class weapon in Splatoon games that can fling ink in midair and creating a large trail of ink when used on the ground. The design itself is also based on its appearance in the original game. The bury effect can reference how weapon splat enemies in one hit, while the ink trailing slowing down enemies references how it works in the games and that only the summoner and their teammates cannot be affected by it.
- Up Special - Super Jump: Inkling leaps up in squid form before falling back down. The squid can damage when it contact with them. This move is based on the mechanic where the Inklings can transverse through the stage by jumping to a teammate, a Squid Beakon, or the spawn shot.
- Down Special - Splat Bomb: It is based on the sub weapon of the same name with a similar function. Inkling throws a tetrahedron bomb that can damage opponents when it explodes near the, causing them to be splattered in ink. The distance and arc of the Bomb's trajectory is determined by the length of the button press: a short press will lob it a short distance, while a held press will toss in a lower arc for a further distance. If the bomb touches an attacker upon activation/throwing animation, then it explodes upon impact. The ink tank has to be at least a certain prectange full to activate based on the fairly near to the bottom of the tank.
- Final Smash - Killer Wail: The Inkling pulls out a large megaphone-like machine and places it on the ground. The machine then emits large damaging sound waves which can be angled. Then, Killer Wail replaces the sound waves with a blast of ink, covering other fighters in it. While somewhat similar to Zero Laser in function, it differs in allowing the Inkling to act normally while the Killer Wail is active. The device is a special weapon in the original game that releases sound waves to damage opponents, even if they are behind a wall.
In the Boxing Ring stage, she is referred to as “Part Kid, Part Squid”, referencing to how Inklings can transform into their humanoid forms or squid forms. Some other languages use play on words for Inkling's boxing ring name. The Japanese version, "イカしたワカモノ", is a wordplay on いかした (ikashita, meaning stylish, fresh) and イカ (ika, meaning squid). The German version, "Ihre Kleckszellenz", is a play on words with "ihre exzellenz", meaning "your excellency", and "klecks", meaning "blob" (of ink). The traditional Chinese version, "墨力四射的年轻人" is a wordplay on 魅力四射, meaning charismatic, and 墨, meaning ink.
Two of Inkling's taunts are based on signals used to communicate for online multiplayer battle modes. The up taunt has her raises the Splattershot several times in a celebratory way, referencing the "C'mon!" signal, while the down taunt has her jump happily when smiling, a reference to the "Booyah!"signal.
All of the Inkling's alternate costumes are based on the customization options that feature wearable gear that can be found in Splatoon and Splatoon 2. The outfits also alternate between a female and male variant and the different color of their hair reflects the color of their ink and squid form, which is reflective of that color change in the games. They are specifically:
- Orange (default)
- Blue: He wears fake contacts, Zinc Layered LS, and Purple Hi-Horses. The artwork is based on the default male Inkling as seen on the cover of the original game.
- Yellow: She wears the Hero Headset, Jacket, and Runner Replicas, making her resemble Agent 3.
- Green: He wears a Skull Bandana, Armor Jacket Replica, and Moto Boots. The artwork is based on the box art in vol. 2 of Sheldon's Picks.
- Pink: She wears the Takoroka Mesh, Black Squideye, and White Kicks.
- Cyan: He wears the Retro Specs, Baby-Jelly Shirt, and Blue Slip-Ons.
- Purple: She wears the Squid Hairclip, School Uniform, and School Shoes, as seen from her promotional appearance in Squid Research Laboratory.
- Indigo: He wears the Skate Helmet, Octo Tee, and Octoling Boots.
All of the victory poses are based on three of the different victory animations for both games depending on weapon class. These are based on the ones from the Shooter-type weapon in Splatoon 2, with the initial animation based on the male version of that weapon in the original game; a combination of the Roller-type weapons in both games, and the female version of the Slosher-type weapon from the original game. Except for the last one, the male version of the victory pose alters the ending pose for the male Inkling.
Their Classic Mode is called "An Inkredible Journey" and most of their opponents are characters with different alternate costumes that match with the color of the stage they are fighting in. This is a reference to Turf Wars in Splatoon games, where a team of three Inklings must fill more territory of ink against another team. Round 6 is also a Free-for-all against two other Inklings with two lives each, matching with the theme. The final boss is against Marx, possibly due to his multi-colored wings which fits the theme.
Moray Towers[]
Moray Towers is the only stage to represent Splatoon in the game, it's based on one of the multiplayer locations in the games.
The stage's layout involves multiple floors with inclines that connect to the next floors. Players that run on the inclines will go downwards unless they are coming from the bottom or making a sudden turn before reaching a flat platform from the left or right side. There are two versions of Moray Towers stage: the regular daylight version and the Splatfest nighttime version. The Splatfest version is activated when either Ink Me Up, Ebb & Flow, Acid Hues, or Muck Warfare is played.
Before the start of the fight during the on-screen appearances, ink will be splattered across the stage for aesthetic purposes, somewhat similar to what the inklings do in the stage in Splatoon games. Judd and Li'l Judd can also be seen in the background of the stage. During the regular version they would normally sleep while the Splatfest version has them dancing. They jump whenever someone gets KO'd, and during the one minute mark in a timed match they would hold up flags that match the color of the player in the lead based on the one that surrounds their damage meter (Player 1 is red, Player 2 is blue, Player 3 is yellow and Player 4 is green).
Squid Sisters[]
The Squid Sisters, the pair pop idol of Splatoon, make their debut in Super Smash Bros. as a new Assist Trophy in Ultimate.
When they are summoned, they appear in the middle of the stage and perform a live concert after saying "Stay fresh!". The song will change to Calamari Incantation or Ink Me Up. As they are performing, the camera zooms in on them, and the blast lines get smaller and smaller, making it easier for players to be KO'd, similar to the game's Sudden Death except the camera returns to normal when they disappear. However, they will not appear if the stage renders characters in 2D, make constant layout changes, or have hazards that engulf a majority of the stage.
Mii costumes[]
Mii Gunners wearing the Splatoon 2 outfit.
The Inkling outfits and the Squid hats return to Ultimate and are available from the start, as well as alter Inkling outfits based on their Splatoon 2 designs. Both Inkling outfits are used for Mii Gunners, but all five items need to be unlocked by purchasing them from the in-game shop or getting them as random rewards.
The Squid Sisters also get individual costumes as DLC on June 29, 2020 as part of Round 6 of Mii costumes. While Marie's outfit is for the Mii Gunner with gun modified to look like the Hero Shot, Callie's outfit is for the Mii Brawler. The Octoling wig and Judd hat also appear as individual head gears as later DLC on October 18, 2021 as part of Round 11 of Mii costumes.
Spirits[]
The game initially features 25 spirits from the Splatoon series. The Deep Cut spirit was added through the "Fresh New Faces!" event on January 11, 2024. Most of them are unlockable in Spirits mode, either in Adventure Mode or the Spirits Board, where the player must win in a fight with specific conditions, simulating a fight against the spirit's character. Alternative unlock criteria are indicated when available. Most spirits can also be obtained as random rewards or by purchasing them from the in-game shop; this is only listed when it's the only way to unlock the spirit.
Fighter Spirits usually come in two alternative artworks, one based on artwork from the character's original series, and the artwork from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate itself; only the original series artwork is shown here.
Music tracks[]
The game introduces 26 Splatoon tracks. 21 tracks are available from the start, while 5 tracks are unlocked as random rewards or by purchasing them from the in-game shop. All of these tracks can be played in Moray Towers. Update to Ver. 8.1.0 on August 4, 2020 allowed any of these tracks to be played on Battlefield, Small Battlefield, Big Battlefield, and Final Destination stages.
The Inklings also get a new victory fanfare. It is a remix of the online victory jingle from the original game. However, it's unavailable in the Sound Test and is therefore not listed here.

- Splattack! (Remix): A brassy two-tone ska remix of "Splattack!". It begins with a remix of "Opening", which plays before a match starts, and also includes an upbeat take on "Now or Never!", which plays in Splatoon when one minute is left in multiplayer battles.
