The game's distinctive features are its minimalistic art style, and time moving slower when the protagonist doesn't move, allowing the player to analyze their situation and react in slow motion, adding a strategy element to the fps formula.

The plot is told through meta-narration, with the player playing a fictionalized version of themselves playing the game on a DOS computer.

The game received an updated version optimized for Virtual Reality support, titled SUPERHOT VR and released on May 25, 2017 for the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PlayStation VR.
A standalone expansion, titled SUPERHOT: MIND CONTROL DELETE was released on 16 July 2020 for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

A card game based on the video game, simply titled SUPERHOT: the Card Game was released on May 25, 2018.
