For detailed information about this series, see: Pixels at Wikipedia
Pixels is a movie series about video game characters Earth.
While the original short featured video game characters attacking New York with little to no plot, this was expanded upon in the movie, where it's stated that the video game characters are sent by aliens in response to a time capsule sent to space in 1982 containing videos of classic arcade games, and misinterpreted by them as a declaration of war.
Two online video games were also released to promote the movie: Dojo Quest, based on the only original game within the movie, and Pixels Defense, based on the final scene from the movie.

Note: While the video game characters are fictional in the movie's world, they can potentially be considered real incarnations of them, applying the Toy Story rule; this however is a weak instance of such rule, so the links are considered arguable. This only applies to the 2015 movie, since character appearances in the short film weren't officially authorized.
