This page details the scenes and characters in the MediEvil game MediEvil: Resurrection that parody and pay homage to popular films.
MediEvil: Resurrection[]
September 01, 2005
Indiana Jones[]
A cutscene in the Enchanted Forest level pays homage to the famous Golden Idol swapping scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Lord of the Rings[]
The game features several Lord of the Rings references:
- Enemies called Shrubbites, who are small, stumpy tree people; a parody of the Ents from Lord of the Rings.
- Also in the game are the Fazguls, Zarok's elite bodyguards who are impervious to mortal weapons. Their name and shrouded appearance are referencing the Nazgûl, Sauron's "most terrible servants."
- A character in the game, the Pumpkin Witch, calls her piece of the Anubis Stone "my precious," much like what Gollum calls the One Ring.
Pirates of the Caribbean[]
The first cutscene in the level Dragon Island is a homage to the introductory scene of Captain Jack Sparrow in the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, The Curse of the Black Pearl.
The Shining[]
The second cutscene in the Inside the Asylum level is a homage to the famous "Here's Johnny" scene from The Shining.
License[]
MediEvil: Resurrection was developed by SCE Cambridge Studio and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Indiana Jones was owned by Lucasfilm at the time of the game's release. Pirates of the Caribbean are owned by Disney. Lord of the Rings was originally written by J. R. R. Tolkien and produced into films by New Line Cinema. The Shining was created and is owned by Stephen King. Despite there being no legal connections between the various films and MediEvil, the references in question are minor parodies/homages and thus likely do not constitute a copyright infringement.
