The "Modern" version of Manhole features many elements from the Mario series. This creates an undirect in-universe link between them since Mario elements appear within an official version of Manhole, even if not the original one.

In detail the manhole covers are supposedly replaced with falling platforms (since they look like falling platforms from Super Mario Land games) and the player is controlling Yoshi, who holds the upper platforms with his nose and the bottom ones with his tongue. The pedestrians are replaced with Toad, Donkey Kong Jr. and Mario, each one walking at different speed. Oddly more than one Mario can be onscreen at the same time in Hard mode (but the second one can be assumed to be Luigi). At 200, 500 and 700 points a Monty Mole comes out of the ground and throws a 1-Up Heart at Yoshi. The heart must be catched in the air to have a miss removed.
