This page explains in detail the interactions between the Super Smash Bros. series and the Yoshi series.
Super Smash Bros.[]
January 21, 1999
Super Smash Bros. features from the Yoshi series:
Yoshi[]
In game bio:
Yoshi is the friendly dinosaur of Yoshi's Island. He began as Mario's partner, but has since built his own identity, and now appears in many games. He uses his unique ability to turn whatever he swallows into an egg as his foremost attack. Yoshis come in a rainbow cloud of colors and are said to have a high IQ from a very early age.
Works:
- Super Mario World (SNES)
- Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES)
- Yoshi's Story (N64)
Yoshi is one of the eight starting characters in Super Smash Bros. and is the only one representing the Yoshi franchise. His look is based on his cameo appearance in Super Mario 64.
His special attacks are based on his abilities in Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Story, but he has an original set of punches, kicks, headbutts and tail sweeps as his basic moves.
Notably, he's the only character to have a shield different than a bubble of energy, instead he retracts into an egg, that works differently, not allowing him to jump, but not shrinking when damaged. This references Yoshis being found in eggs in Super Mario World, as referenced with his on-screen appearance, and their ability to retract into eggs shown in Yoshi's Island when Baby Mario transforms into Superstar Mario and in Yoshi's Story after eating a Turbo Tulip.
Like in Yoshi's Island he can float after jumping, but for obvious gameplay reasons his floating ability is not as effective.
His grab move consists of him launching his tongue forward and pulling the opponent into his mouth to then throw them out. This is based on his signature move from Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island. He also has a taunt where he spins around and waves his arms up and down. This is a reference to the animation he makes after sniffing for a buried secret in Yoshi's Story.
Special moves:
- Neutral - Egg Lay: Yoshi eats the opponent like in his grab move, but instead of spitting them he swallows them to then lay them insde an egg, leaving them open for attack (though they only receive 50% damage), and can be used to put opponents off-stage. This move is based on his ability to swallow enemies and turn them into eggs from Yoshi's Island.
- Up - Egg Throw: Yoshi launches an egg upwards in an arc, which can be angled along a variety of trajectories. This is based on his attack from Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Story, however he originally needed to eat an enemy to lay an egg before being able to throw it, while here the eggs just appear in his hand for him to throw. Also in most cases in the original games the eggs would be thrown straight, unaffected by gravity, the only exception being during the final battle against Giant Baby Bowser.
- Down - Bomb/Hip Drop: Based on his Ground Pound attack from Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Story, he smashes straight downward into the ground, causing great damage and producing small stars for additional damage. If used on the ground, Yoshi will jump forward before dropping down. This move's name is given as Hip Drop (based on the Japanese name for the Ground Pound) in Yoshi's in-game character profile, but it's called Bomb on the manual (likely a mistake).
His palette swaps are based on the differently colored Yoshis from various games, with the shoes color specifically based on their Yoshi's Story color:
- Green Body: 1P & Green Team Yoshi's default appearance in all games he's in.
- Red Body: 2P & Red Team Based on the Red Yoshi. He wears purple shoes instead of blue shoes.
- Cyan Body: 3P & Blue Team Based on the Light Blue Yoshi.
- Yellow Body: 4P Based on the Yellow Yoshi.
- Pink Body: For COM Only found in the Yoshi Team, it's based on the Pink Yoshi.
- Blue Body: For COM Only found in the Yoshi Team, it's based on the Blue Yoshi.
One of Yoshi’s victory pose has him spin around and hold up two fingers. This is resemblant of his animation after clearing a stage in Yoshi's Story, which is clearer in later games.
Yoshi Team[]
A team of 18 multi-colored Yoshis, it's fought in Stage 2 of 1P Game. It features the unique Pink Yoshi and Blue Yoshi palette swaps. The team returns in later games, but since it doesn't have the unique colors, it can simply be considered a normal team match.
Yoshi's Island[]
Yoshi's home stage, it's based on Yoshi's Story and it consists in a main platform shaped like a book, referencing the nature of the stages in the original game, and various smaller platforms, including two disappearing cloud platforms on the sides. The background features various elements from the game, including the Super Happy Tree, Hint Blocks, Goonies and Fly Guys, these sometimes holding a fruit.
Music Tracks[]
- 9: A remix of music heard in Yoshi's Story for Nintendo 64, heard on the Yoshi's Island stage.
- 19: The victory fanfare of Yoshi is a combination of two songs from Yoshi's Story, the title screen, and the jingle heard when Yoshi collects 30 necessary fruits and completes a level.
Super Smash Bros. Melee[]
November 21, 2001
Super Smash Bros. Melee features from the Yoshi series:
- 1 playable character (Yoshi)
- 3 stages (counting Yoshi's Island, actually from Super Mario World)
- 1 Event Match item (Yoshi's Egg)
- 8 trophies
- 4 music tracks (counting "Yoshi's Island", actually from Super Mario World)
Yoshi[]
Yoshi returns as the only character from the Yoshi series and is mostly unchanged. However his "Bomb" move has been renamed Yoshi's Bomb (though it remained Hip Drop in the Japanese version). Also to note is that in Adventure mode, using the Egg Lay move against common enemies, will make Yoshi swallow them without laying the egg, instantly killing them.
Like every other character he now has a new pummel attack after the grab move, and a new Side Special move.
His pummel move consists in chewing the enemy, an ability he never had in any Yoshi (nor Mario) game.
His Side Move is the Egg Roll: he encases himself into an egg and rolls through the stage damaging the opponents. This move is an extension of his ability to retreat into an egg, but may specifically be based on Yoshi's Story, where Yoshi could launch himself straight in the air inside an egg after eating a Turbo Tulip.
His palette swaps are the same of the previous game, but both Pink and Blue Yoshis are now selectable.
Stages[]
Melee features two new starting stages listed in the Yoshi series: a second Yoshi's Island stage, actually based on Super Mario World rather than a Yoshi game, and a Yoshi's Story stage.
The Yoshi's Island stage from the previous game also returns unchanged, and it's unlocked after hitting the Sandbag 400m/1,350 ft in the Home Run Contest.
Yoshi's Island[]
A new starting stage, despite it being listed with the Yoshi series, it's actually based on the Yoshi's Island zone from Super Mario World rather than a Yoshi game.
For details see Mario X Super Smash Bros.#Other references 2.
Yoshi's Story[]
A simple stage based on Yoshi's Story, Fly Guys occasionally fly into the stage carrying food, in the same way they carried fruits in the original game. They can be hit to let them drop the food. The background also features Pak E. Derm walking back and forth, but he doesn't affect gameplay.
Yoshi's Egg[]
A new item in the game, it's only found in Event 13: Yoshi's Egg, where it has to be protected from enemy attack for 55 seconds. If hit or tossed too many times it breaks and the event match results in a failure. While a player should try to keep the egg, it still is considered a throwing weapon, dealing damage if thrown at opponents.
Trophies[]
There are 8 Yoshi trophies in the game. Yoshi's 3 character trophies, 2 stage element trophies and 3 trophies about Yoshi elements not in the game:
Music Tracks[]
The game features 3 tracks originating from Yoshi games, but additionally also lists the "Yoshi's Island" track which is actually from the Mario series.
- Yoshi's Island: A repeating banjo track heard in several levels in Super Mario World for SNES, after the initial part a woodblock beat is added, similar to the original game when riding Yoshi. It's heard on Yoshi's Island.
- Yoshi's Story: An upbeat orchestration of the main theme from Yoshi's Story, where it plays in most grass levels. It's heard on the Yoshi's Story stage.
- 28: Yoshi's Island N64: The music for Past Stages: Yoshi's Island, which comes from Yoshi's Story for N64, is brought back unaltered along with the stage itself.
- 42: Yoshi's Victory: a new version of Yoshi's victory fanfare.
Other References[]
Food is a type of item that can be picked up to restore health.
While it's officially considered an original "Super Smash Bros." item, and food is a common health recovery item in video games, among the various type of food are fruits, that may be based on those Yoshis can eat in Yoshi's Story.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]
January 31, 2008
Super Smash Bros. Brawl features from the Yoshi series:
- 1 playable character (Yoshi)
- 2 stages (counting Yoshi's Island, actually from Super Mario World)
- 4 trophies
- 25 stickers
- 6 music tracks
Yoshi[]
Yoshi returns as the only character from his series in the game, and is once again a starting character. His design is mostly taken from Mario Kart DS. His moveset has only minor changes, including his Egg Throw move functioning as a third jump when executed in midair, aiding his vertical recovery, but his Egg Roll no longer moving horizontally when used in midair, limiting his horizontal recovery.
Additionally in Adventure Mode, he can't eat common enemies with his Egg Lay move any more, removing his ability to instantly kill them, but instead he causes significant damage to them with his tongue.
Yoshi retains the palette swaps from the previous game, but his red outfit now has blue shoes like in the original games, instead of purple shoes.
Like every other character in the game, he obtains a Final Smash move, Super Dragon: Yoshi grows wings and starts breathing fire, allowing the player to control him flying around the stage for a short period of time. He shoots a continuous stream of fire if no button is pushed, but pressing the attack button makes him shoot a fireball.
This references the abilities he could get by eating different colored Koopa Shells in Super Mario World. The name of the move also comes from a message signed "Super Dragon Yoshi" that can be found in Yoshi's House in Super Mario World after beating the game. Therefore this move references the Mario series, rather than the Yoshi series.
Stages[]
The Yoshi's Island stage based on Super Mario World returns unchanged from the previous game, and there also is a new stage, sharing once again the same name:
Yoshi's Island[]
The third stage in the series sharing the name "Yoshi's Island", it's the first one to be actually based on the game Yoshi's Island. This stage is considered a new version of the Yoshi's Story stage from the previous episode, featuring a similar layout and Fly Guys that fly in carrying food and can be attacked.
Instead of the disappearing clouds, there's a Support Ghost that sometimes comes in from the bottom of the stage providing an extra platform on one side.
A notable aesthetic feature of this stage is the change of season during the match, with the starting one randomly chosen. Each season features different elements reminiscent of the various stage types in the original game, like snow in winter and Goonies flying in the background in summer and autumn. If the background music is Obstacle Course, then it will change between two versions with the change of seasons.
While using Olimar's Final Smash, End of Day, the moon from the battle against the World 5 boss Raphael the Raven from Yoshi's Island can also be seen in the sky.
Trophies[]
The game features 4 trophies from the Yoshi series: Yoshi's character trophy, his Final Smash trophy, and two secondary character trophies:
Stickers[]
There are 25 stickers based on artworks from Yoshi games.
Note: stickers are listed based on the game of origin, not the represented character, so the list doesn't include Yoshi stickers that are from Mario games; for the same reason the stickers from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi's Island are listed in both series.
Music Tracks[]
The game features 5 music tracks in the Yoshi category, all new to the game, and all used in the new Yoshi's Island stage.
There also is a new version of Yoshi's victory fanfare, listed among Sound Effects in the Fanfare category.
Only one of these tracks needs to be unlocked, while all the others are available from the start.
The "Yoshi's Island" track from Melee also returns, but since it's only listed in the Super Smash Bros. category, we consider it a Mario track.
Base Tracks[]
- Obstacle Course: A medley consisting mostly of a remix of the "Athletic" level theme from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and also a bit of the final boss theme. The version available in the Sound Test is the one that plays during Spring and Summer in the Yoshi's Island stage; the slightly different version that plays during Autumn and Winter is not available in the Sound Test.
- Ending (Yoshi's Story): A tropical sounding remix of the credits theme from Yoshi's Story. Beside being used on the Yoshi's Island stage, this song is also played during Yoshi's Classic Mode credits.
- Yoshi's Island: A jazzy remix of the commonly heard ground level theme from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.
- Wildlands: A combination of the "level beginning" jingle and the Wildlands level theme from Yoshi's Island DS.
Unlockable Track[]
- Flower Field: Remix of the Flower Field theme from Yoshi Touch & Go. It's unlocked by collecting the respective CD.
Sound Effects[]
- Fanfare - 5: A whimsical orchestration of the Yoshi's Story main theme and level complete fanfare.
Other References[]
Three trophies in the Mario category reference the Yoshi series: Shy Guy and Boo, mentioning Yoshi's Island DS among their appearances, and Wiggler, which mentions the winged Wiggler enemies from Yoshi's Island, also known as Flutters (this however may just count as a reference to the Mario series, since the game's full title is Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island).
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and for Wii U[]
September 13, 2014 (3DS); November 21, 2014 (Wii U)
Being alternate versions of the same game, these two feature mostly the same content, except for stages and trophies and including some different modes. Specifically they feature from the Yoshi’s Island series:
- 1 playable character (Yoshi)
- 1 Smash Run enemy (3DS exclusive mode)
- 3 stages across both versions
- 3DS: 1 stages
- Wii U: 2 stages (including Yoshi's Island, actually from Super Mario World)
- 6 Trophies across both versions
- 3DS: 4 trophies
- Wii U: 3 trophies
- 1 Smash Tour enemy (Kamek) (Wii U exclusive mode)
- 1 playable Masterpiece (Yoshi) (Wii U exclusive mode)
- 13 Music tracks
Yoshi[]
Yoshi once again returns as the only playable character from his series. He received some minor changes, including his stance being now an upright more dynamic fighting stance, based on his stance from Yoshi's Island, which had him march in place, rather than on his stance from Super Mario World; this change also translated into some of his basic moves being adapted. His dashing and walking animations are still based on his running animation from Super Mario World though.
He retains all the alternate outfits from the previous game, but he gains two new ones, a Purple one and a Black one, based respectively on Purple Yoshi, who appeared in Yoshi's Island, but not in Yoshi's Story, and on Black Yoshi, which is a rare kind of Yoshi from Yoshi's Story.
Additionally the spots on Yoshi's egg now match his current color, like in the original games, rather than always being green.
In the Boxing Ring stage, he is referred to as “Omnivore of the Year”, referencing that he eats fruit and enemies that he comes across. The PAL French character title for Yoshi, “Le distributeur d'oeufs au beurre noir”, is a pun of pronunciation with the names "œufs" (eggs) and "yeux" (eyes).
This game also introduces character customization, allowing to chose between a regular variation and two alternate ones for each character's moves. Yoshi's alternate moves are:
- Neutral:
- Lick: Yoshi leaps forward extending his tongue, causing damage instead of encasing the opponent in an egg.
- Egg Launch: a variation on the Egg Lay move that launches the opponent a far distance after encasing them in the egg, but they can escape much faster. When launching the egg, Yoshi also performs a small jump.
- Side:
- Heavy Egg Roll: a slower, but stronger version of the Egg Roll.
- Light Egg Roll: Yoshi encases himself in the egg and makes a large leap forward. It travels more quickly, but going in an arc makes it harder to hit opponents.
- Up:
- High Jump: Yoshi jumps high into the air, but doesn't throw an egg. It can be used multiple times in the air, but it won't provide any vertical height after the first three usages.
- Timed Egg Throw: Yoshi throws a larger egg that explodes after a set amount of time, but it doesn't deal damage on contact.
- Down:
- Star Bomb: a version of the Yoshi Bomb that causes less damage on impact, but produces larger stars that cause more damage and travel further.
- Crushing Bomb: Yoshi jumps higher and causes more damage on impact, but the move doesn't produce stars and has more startup and ending lag.
Fly Guy[]
Fly Guy appears as the only Yoshi enemy in the 3DS-exclusive Smash Run mode. Much like its counterpart from the stages, it's harmless, but flies in carrying food or other helpful items, so defeating it will cause the item to drop.
The mode also features multicolored Shy Guys, but they're considered Mario enemies, despite the Yellow and Green Shy Guys debuting in Yoshi's Island and being mostly associated with the Yoshi series.
Stages[]
The only Yoshi stage in the 3DS version is the Yoshi's Island stage based on Yoshi's Island, returning unchanged from Brawl, and it's once again a starting stage.
The Wii U version features two Yoshi stages, both available from the start: Woolly World, new to the series, and the Yoshi's Island stage based on Super Mario World, returning basically unchanged from Melee and Brawl.
Woolly World[]
A stage based on Yoshi's Woolly World, marking the first time that a Super Smash Bros. stage is based on a then-unreleased game, since Yoshi's Woolly World would only be released seven months after Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. Like the game it's based on, the stage is entirely made of yarn, and features specific elements from stages of the game.
The first area is based on World 1-5, Knitty-Knotty Windmill Hill, featuring a windmill in the background, but there also are platforms hanging from above shaped like clouds and a rocket, that teeter when fighters walk on them; these hanging platforms are based World 3-2, Wobble Mobile Jaunt. After a certain amount of time the ground disappears and the background changes into a sky theme; then a new floor and background appear, featuring elements shaped like toy blocks, again resembling Wobble Mobile Jaunt. The stage transitions again to the sky and back to the first area.
Kamek[]
Only one enemy from the Yoshi series appear in this board game-like mode exclusive to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. The enemy is Kamek, that uses magic to change the position of the checkpoints.
Trophies[]
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS features 4 Yoshi trophies: the two Yoshi fighter trophies, the Fly Guy enemy trophy and a series related trophy.
The Wii U version only features 3 Yoshi trophies: the two Yoshi fighter trophies and his Final Smash trophy.
Since the only trophy appearing in both versions is Yoshi's main trophy (both versions also feature a Yoshi Alternate trophy, but since they feature different models, we count them separate), there only are 6 Yoshi trophies across both versions.
Yoshi Masterpiece[]
The puzzle game Yoshi, first game titled after the character, known in Japan as Yoshi no Tamago and in Europe as Mario & Yoshi, is featured in the game as a playable Masterpiece. It's unlocked after clearing Classic mode as Yoshi.
The game starts at the title screen and stops after 3 minutes of play.
Music Tracks[]
The 3DS version of the game includes 3 music tracks from the Yoshi series, all available from the start, all used on the Yoshi's Island stage, and all returning from Brawl, although the Fall/Winter variation of the Obstacle Course wasn't available in the Sound Test in that game, so we consider it a new track.
The Wii U version features 11 Yoshi tracks, including 5 new tracks and 6 returning tracks. These are almost all stage tracks from previous games, the only one not returning being "Yoshi's Island" from Brawl (while the "Yoshi's Island" track originally from Melee is now in the Mario category). Also in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U the two versions of the Obstacle Course are put together in one, arguably creating a new track.
The only unlockable track is Flower Field.
Yoshi's victory fanfare also returns unchanged from Brawl, but it's unavailable in the Sound Test and is therefore not listed here.
3DS:
- Obstacle Course (Spring/Summer): A remix of the "Athletic" theme from Yoshi's Island mixed with the final boss theme. Returning from Brawl, it plays on Yoshi's Island during the Spring and Summer.
- Obstacle Course (Fall/Winter): A different version of the Obstacle Course track that plays during the Fall and Winter. While it's actually returning from Brawl, it's available in the Sound Test for the first time in this game.
- Ending (Yoshi's Story): A tropical sounding remix of the credits theme from Yoshi's Story.
Wii U:
- Yoshi's Island: A medley of music from Yoshi's Island, consisting mainly in the "Flower Garden" theme, but also including components of "Music Box", "Level Select", and "Stage Clear". It plays on Woolly World.
- Obstacle Course: remix of the "Athletic" theme from Yoshi's Island mixed with the final boss theme, it includes both versions of the Obstacle Course track from the 3DS version (originally from Brawl), played back to back. It plays on Woolly World.
- Yoshi's Story: a remix of the Yoshi's Story theme, returning from the original Super Smash Bros. and from Melee (where it was titled Yoshi's Island N64). It plays on Yoshi's Island.
- Yoshi's Story Ver. 2: An upbeat orchestration of the main theme from Yoshi's Story, returning from Melee (where it was simply called Yoshi's Story). It plays on Woolly World.
- Ending (Yoshi's Story): A tropical sounding remix of the credits theme from Yoshi's Story. Returning from Brawl and for Nintendo 3DS, it plays on Woolly World.
- Wildlands: A combination of the "level beginning" jingle and the Wildlands level theme from Yoshi's Island DS. Returning from Brawl, it plays on Woolly World.
- Main Theme (Yoshi's New Island): taken directly from Yoshi's New Island, it plays on Woolly World.
- Bandit Valley (Yoshi's New Island): taken directly from Yoshi's New Island, it plays on Woolly World.
- Yoshi's Woolly World (Remix): A remix of the main theme and the underground stage theme from Yoshi's Woolly World, also including the theme for the stage Sponge Cave Spelunking. It plays on Woolly World.
- Yoshi's Woolly World (Original): Main theme from Yoshi's Woolly World, taken directly from the game. It plays on Woolly World.
- Flower Field: Remix of the Flower Field theme from Yoshi Touch & Go, returning from Brawl. It's unlocked by collecting the respective CD and it plays on Woolly World.
Yoshi's Woolly World[]
June 26, 2015
This game features compatibility with many amiibo, and scanning a supported one unlocks a pattern for Yarn Yoshi based on the respective character.
Most Super Smash Bros. amiibo from the base game are supported, the only exceptions being the ones based on Pokémon characters. Supported ones and the respective patterns are:
Available at launch:
Released on July 17, 2015:
Released on September 10, 2015:
Released on September 25, 2015:
Released on October 29, 2015:
Released on November 5, 2015:
Note that while most of these characters originate from other series, the design is simply based on the amiibo, so these only count as references to the Super Smash Bros. series.
The same patterns can be unlocked using amiibo from other series based on the same character, but this is considered incidental, since the game was likely developed with the Super Smash Bros. line in mind.
Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World[]
January 19, 2017
The 3DS version of Yoshi's Woolly World includes the same amiibo feature as the Wii U version, including all the same patterns, but also adding ones based on more recent amiibo.
The new supported Super Smash Bros. amiibo and respective patterns are:
In this updated version the only unsupported Super Smash Bros. amiibo are therefore all the Pokémon ones, Cloud and Bayonetta.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]
December 7, 2018
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate features from the Yoshi series:
- 1 playable character (Yoshi)
- 4 stages (counting Yoshi's Island (Melee), actually from Super Mario World)
- 1 Mii Fighter costume
- 26 spirits
- 15 music tracks
Yoshi[]
Yoshi is once again the only character from his series to appear in the game, and being one of the eight starting characters from the original Super Smash Bros., he returns as a starting character in Ultimate.
His appearance and moveset received mostly minor changes, including having a new dashing animation more similar to the one from Yoshi's Island DS, and a new idle pose similar to one from Yoshi's Island. The eggs from Yoshi's Egg Throw move now bounce on the ground.
Like all other "transforming" Final Smashes, Yoshi's Super Dragon move is removed and replaced by a new one, Stampede!, alternatively called Yoshi Stampede: Yoshi rushes forward headbutting the opponent and transporting them into a rocky gorge where they're run over by a horde of Yoshis, reproducing almost exactly the respective scene from the intro of Super Smash Bros. Melee; the move might also be conceptually based on a move of Mini-Yoshi from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, sharing the same name and function.
Yoshi keeps most of the alternate colors from the previous game, but his Black outfit is replaced by one based on the upcoming game Yoshi's Crafted World that changes the textures of his body to a soft doll-like material.
Yoshi's Classic Mode is called "Jurassic Journey!" and all his enemies are reptiles (Ivysaur, Ridley, King K. Rool, Koopalings, Charizard, and Bowser). The final boss is Rathalos.
Stages[]
The game features four Yoshi stages, which are almost all the stages from previous games, the only exception being Woolly World from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
To avoid confusion, two of the stages called "Yoshi's Island" are renamed: the stage from the original Super Smash Bros., based on Yoshi's Story, is renamed Super Happy Tree, after the tree in the background; the stage from Melee, based on Super Mario World, is renamed Yoshi's Island (Melee). The featured stages are therefore: Super Happy Tree, Yoshi's Island (Melee), Yoshi's Story, and Yoshi's Island.
Once again Yoshi's Island (Melee) is considered a Yoshi stage despite its origin being explicitly stated to be Super Mario World.
All stages return basically unchanged, save for graphical enhancements, but in the Yoshi's Story stage Shy Guys always bring food with them, regardless of item settings.
This game also adds the option to turn off stage hazards, which turns the clouds in Super Happy Tree and Rotating Blocks in Yoshi's Island (Melee) into static platforms, makes the center platform in Yoshi's Island not move, and removes Randall, Propeller Fly Guys, and Fly Guys from Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Story.
Woolly Yoshi Mii Fighter Outfit[]
The game features a new Mii Fighter outfit based on Yoshi from Yoshi's Woolly World.
It consists in a Woolly Yoshi Hat and a Woolly Yoshi Outfit for Mii Brawlers. Both items are unlockable separately as random rewards or by purchasing them from the in-game shop.
Spirits[]
The game features 26 spirits from the Yoshi series. Most of them are unlockable in Spirits mode, either in Adventure Mode or the Spirits Board, where the player must win in a fight with specific conditions, simulating a fight against the spirit's character.
Alternative unlock criteria are indicated when available.
Most spirits can also be obtained as random rewards or by purchasing them from the in-game shop; this is only listed when it's the only way to unlock the spirit.
Fighter Spirits usually come in two alternative artworks, one based on artwork from the character's original series, and the artwork from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate itself; only the original series artwork is shown here.
The game originally indicated each spirit's sub-series of origin, but this was changed with update 1.1.0 to indicate each spirit simply as "Yoshi series". Here we list the sub-series as indicated in version 1.0.0 and also the specific game that originated the artwork when necessary.

Music Tracks[]
The game features 14 tracks in the Yoshi category, including all tracks from previous games and a new track (listed in bold). The main theme of the Yoshi's Island stage (now retitled "Athletic Theme - Super Mario World") is once again considered a Yoshi track despite originating from a Mario game.
Most of these tracks are available from the start, the only exception being the original version of "Main Theme - Yoshi's Woolly World".
Unlike previous games, this time each track can be chosen to play on any Yoshi stage. Update to Ver. 8.1.0 on August 4, 2020 allowed any of these tracks to be played on Battlefield, Small Battlefield, Big Battlefield, and Final Destination stages.
A slightly altered version of Yoshi's victory theme also returns, but it's not available in the Sound Test and is therefore not listed here.
- Athletic Theme - Super Mario World: remix of the athletic theme from Super Mario World for SNES, returning from Melee (where it was called "Yoshi's Island"), Brawl and for Wii U (where it was considered a Mario track and was called "Yoshi's Island (Melee)").
- Yoshi's Island (Brawl): A jazzy remix of the commonly heard ground level theme from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, returning from Brawl.
- Yoshi's Island (for 3DS / Wii U): A medley of music from Yoshi's Island, returning from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
- Obstacle Course - Yoshi's Island: remix of the "Athletic" theme from Yoshi's Island mixed with the final boss theme, returning from Brawl and for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U. When played in the Yoshi's Island stage it changes alongside the background between the Spring/Summer variation and the Fall/Winter variation, like in Brawl and for Nintendo 3DS; when played on any other stage or the Sound Test, it plays both versions back to back like in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
- Yoshi's Story (64): a remix of the Yoshi's Story theme, returning from the original Super Smash Bros., Melee (where it was titled "Yoshi's Island N64") and for Wii U.
- Yoshi's Story (Melee): An upbeat orchestration of the main theme from Yoshi's Story, returning from Melee and for Wii U, where it was called "Yoshi's Story Ver. 2".
- Yoshi's Tale: A remix of the credits theme from Yoshi's Story. Returning from Brawl and for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, where it was called "Ending (Yoshi's Story)".
- Flower Field: Remix of the Flower Field theme from Yoshi Touch & Go, returning from Brawl and for Wii U.
- Wildlands: A combination of the "level beginning" jingle and the Wildlands level theme from Yoshi's Island DS, returning from Brawl and for Wii U.
- Main Theme - Yoshi's New Island (Remix): Remix of the main theme from Yoshi's New Island.
- Main Theme - Yoshi's New Island: main theme of Yoshi's New Island, taken directly from the game and returning from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
- Bandit Valley: music track taken directly from Yoshi's New Island and returning from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
- Main Theme - Yoshi's Woolly World (Remix): A remix of the main theme and the underground stage theme from Yoshi's Woolly World, returning from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
- Main Theme - Yoshi's Woolly World: Main theme from Yoshi's Woolly World, taken directly from the game and returning from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. This track needs to be unlocked, being found in a chest in Adventure Mode: World of Light.
Yoshi's Crafted World[]

This game features compatibility with many amiibo based on Mario characters, including Dr. Mario, who is exclusive for the Super Smash Bros. line, however it unlocks a generic Mario outfit, so it's possible that the amiibo could be simply recognized as a Mario variation, making this reference incidental.
Other incidentally compatible amiibo from the Super Smash Bros. line are Mario, Peach, Yoshi, Luigi, and Bowser. (see here for their function)
