Mario's character profile mentions "referee" as one of Mario's occupations. This is most likely a reference to his appearance in the NES version of Punch-Out!!

Mario however also made an appearance as the referee in Tennis for NES and Game Boy.

Little Mac, the main character from the Punch-Out!! series, and specifically his incarnation from the NES game, is featured in the game as an Assist Trophy. Once summoned, he dashes toward the opponents and attacks by dealing two straight punches and an uppercut, also making the same noises from the original game.

Like all other Assist Trophies in the game, he also has his own trophy:

Punch-Out!!5Arrow R Super Smash Bros.

Being alternate versions of the same game, these two feature mostly the same content, except for stages and trophies and including some different modes. Specifically they feature from the Punch Out!! series:

Little Mac[]

After appearing as an Assist Trophy in the previous game, Little Mac debuts as an actual fighter and is the only fighter representing the Punch Out!! games. He’s the playable fighter in the game and his default appearance is based on what he wears in Contender Mode when fighting in the Minor Circuit from the Wii version of Punch-Out!!, albeit slightly updated.

Little Mac has very effective ground game in both offense and defense giving him the fastest mobility on the ground. Many of his moves comes from using his fists due to being a boxer. His weakness lies from the air, where he has poor recovery, poor air mobility, and minimal utility for attacks there. Little Mac also uses a Power Meter in the game, giving him uniqueness to other players. Similar to how the meter acts in the games, the bar increases when Little Mac lands punches on his opponents. Unlike those games, it will also increase when Little Mac takes hits (even when shielded).

Special Moves:

  • Neutral - Straight Lunge / KO Uppercut: Little Mac performs the Straight Lunge by stepping back and charging his fist, resulting in him to slide a certain distance. If it charges fully, he slides the farthest distance he can while taking three seconds to flex his burning muscles. If the power meter is charged fully to the point “K.O.” appears near it, the special move (as well as the customized neutral special moves) gets replaced by the KO Uppercut, where Little Mac performs a powerful uppercut. It has a high potential of launching the opponent hit by it to get knocked out by it. While the Straight Lunge is an original move to Smash Bros., the uppercut is reminiscent of Little Mac’s signature moves: the Star Uppercut and KO Punch.
    • Flaming Straight Lunge: Adds a Flame effect where the punch hits multiple times and has a much faster charge time of about one second, but it travels a shorter distance and deals less damage.
    • Stunning Straight Lunge: Adds an electric effect and at full charge will paralyze enemies before launching them. The lunge is also faster and covers a much greater distance, but it deals less damage and lacks knockback resistance.
  • Side - Joy Haymaker: Little Mac leaps forward and performs a downward hook at the end of the move. While this move is original to Smash Bros., the movement is reminiscent of Nick Bruiser’s and Von Kaiser’s jumping overhead punch from Super Punch-Out!! and the Wii version of Punch-Out!! respectively.
    • Grounding Blow: Little Mac leaps high into the air, then shoots downward for the punch. Buries grounded foes, and can meteor smash airborne ones if sweetspotted. It is worse for recovery, however, thanks to its lower horizontal distance and the fact that it makes Little Mac fall quickly.
    • Guard Breaker: A slower but more powerful Jolt Haymaker that can't be blocked by shields.
  • Up - Rising Uppercut: Similar to Wario’s Corkscrew, Little Mac jumps as he spins around, creating a stream of attacks before finishing with an uppercut. Based on the spinning and jumping motion, the move might reference Little Mac’s 3-Star Uppercut from the Wii version of Punch-Out!!, and possibly Doc Louis’ one star-uppercut in Doc Louis’s Punch-Out!!
    • Tornado Uppercut: Increased vertical recovery, but only hits a single time with weak knockback, unable to KO at a realistic percent.
    • Rising Smash: A stronger, electric version that hits twice (at the beginning and end of the move), instead of hitting multiple times. The first hit connects to the second hit, which deals extremely high knockback and damage. However, it has slightly higher startup and significantly increased ending lag, and also possesses little horizontal movement. Unlike the default, it does not go any higher on the ground than it does in the air, and it gives even less vertical distance if it's used while Mac is falling down.
  • Down - Slip Counter: Little Mac assumes a full crouch stance and, if hit, immediately counterattacks by slipping inside to throw an uppercut. The counter may be based on the goal of the Punch-Out!! games being to dodge enemy attacks while attacking them when they are off guard, as well as Don Flamenco allowing Little Mac to throw a where he dodges or blocks before attacking. The crouch may be similar to the movement of Glass Joe‘s movement before landing a punch in the Wii game.
    • Compact Counter: Reduced knockback capabilities, but the counterattack has greatly reduced start up and an increase in speed.
    • Dash Counter: Dash forward upon countering, but can't hit opponents directly in front.
File:SSB4 Giga Mac.jpg
  • Final Smash - Giga Mac: Transforms into Giga Mac, his powered up transformation from two-player mode in the Wii version of Punch-Out!!. Giga Mac's attacks are considerably stronger, with most of them dealing twice as much damage as Little Mac's respective attacks. This is especially evident with his non-angled and upward angled forward smash, sweetspotted up smash, and clean Straight Lunge, each of which are one-hit KOs when they are fully charged. Even his up tilt, dash attack, and back throw become viable KOing options.

Little Mac's down taunt involves a flurry of punches, possibly similar to his victory animation in the Wii version of Punch-Out!!. Doc Louis, Little Mac's coach, is also seen during all of his singular victory poses.

He is the only character to have 16 outfits. This is because he has two different set of outfits, with the second half being made up of wireframed version of Little Mac, reflecting the fighter in the original arcade game of Punch-Out!!. Since the wireframed half feature similar features to the first half counterparts that aren’t wireframed, the wiki is only featuring the references of the first half: File:SSB4 LittleMac Nonwire palette.png File:SSB4 LittleMac Wire palette.png

  • Black: (default)
  • Yellow: Based on his appearance in the Title Defense Mode of the Wii version of Punch-Out!!.
  • White: The color of the boxing gloves and reverse colors of both clothing resembles a glitch in the NES version of Punch Out!! after Little Mac defeats an opponent. When thinking about the pants color including the waistband of it, he has some resemblance to Piston Hondo from the Wii version of the same name.
  • Red (first blue palette): Based on his outfit in Contender Mode when fighting in World Circuit of in the Wii game.
  • Blue: Based on his appearance when fighting in the Major Circuit of Contender Mode in the Wii game.
  • Orange (second yellow palette): Based on the appearance of the second player in two-player mode of the Wii game.
  • Green (second black palette): Resembles his look from the SNES game Super Punch-Out!!.
  • Pink: Little Mac wears the pink-hooded sweatshirt from training montage cutscenes in the Punch Out!! games. The wire-framed version switches the color of the sweatshirt with the color of his green boxing gloves.

While Little Mac will always enter the stage with the same motion while wearing the pink outfit, all but the pink outfit will show the sweatshirt thrown behind.

Boxing Ring[]

Boxing Ring is the only stage representative of the Punch-Out!! series in both the 3DS and Wii U version of the game. The stage has two versions that act very identical with each other. While both designs are representative of the Wii game, the Smash version features the Smash logo with a light blue design, the Punch Out!! version gives the World Circuit logo as seen in the Wii version of Punch-Out!! and the bluish interior design of the Major Circuit.

The stage is made up of two entry ways from opposite sides of the stadium that take up a lot of the stage, with the ring in the center downwards from them. The stage also features a fog machine, LED lights, and an audience in the background. The ring has ropes where players can jump on them to reach the light fixtures above it. It can take a sufficient amount of damage before it collapses down to ring, giving damage to those under it while dimming the lights themselves.

The stage also features a jumbotron with speakers by its side in the background. Its screen displays with what’s going on screen, such as mentioning when a character gets knocked out, mentioning “Chance!” when the Smash Ball appears, or mentioning who’s winning. The thing most noticeable with the jumbotron are the nicknames it displays with up to two of the characters on the stage at a time. The jumbotron and how it displays the players reference its use in the original arcade version of Punch-Out!!. The nicknames themselves are mainly references to how each fighter represent themselves. Taking Little Mac as an example, his nickname is “Bruiser from the Bronx”, referencing his profession as a boxer and where he was born. The bruiser in the name can also be a reference to Rick and Nick Bruiser, two of his opponents in Super Punch Out!!. To find references of other characters in the wiki, go to the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U sections in link pages that feature playable characters in franchises that connects with Super Smash Bros (won’t be found in Metal Gear or Ice Climber link page).

Smash Tour item[]

File:SSB4 SmashTour item DocLouis.png

Items take the form of trophies in this board game-like mode exclusive to the Wii U version of the game.
One of these items is Doc Louis. It's a blue item, meaning that it's used in the game board, and it increases the effect of collected stat boosts by 50%.

Trophies[]

The list of trophies differs between the two versions of the game, with the 3DS version including 6 Punch-Out!! trophies and the Wii U version including 13 trophies. 6 trophies are the same in both versions, 1 trophy is exclusive for the 3DS version and 7 trophies are exclusive for the Wii U version, so there are 14 trophies in total across both versions.

Note: both versions of the game have an Alternate character trophy for Little Mac, therefore these are sometimes listed as appearing in both games, however since they feature completely different models, we list them as separate.

The game Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream, the 1990 re-release of the NES version of the game, is featured in the game as a playable Masterpiece. It's unlocked after clearing the "No Mere Sparring Match" event on normal difficulty or higher.

The game starts at the title screen and stops after 3 minutes of play.

Music tracks[]

The 3DS version of the game features 2 tracks from the Punch-Out!! series, all of which return in the Wii U version, that also features 3 new tracks for a total of 5 tracks. Two of these tracks are unlockable.

Little Mac gets a new victory fanfare in both games. It is a remix of the song that plays whenever Little Mac wins a match in the NES Punch-Out!! and the Wii reboot of the same name. However, it's unavailable in the Sound Test and is therefore not listed here.

All of these tracks are new to Super Smash Bros.

3DS[]

  • Jogging/Countdown: This is an arrangement of several themes from the Punch-Out!! series, beginning with the jogging theme from the original Punch-Out!! before transitioning to an arranged version of the theme that plays when Little Mac is knocked down for the ten-count, with the boxing theme itself played in sync. It is also used in his Classic Mode credits.

Little Mac[]

File:SSBU LittleMac.png

Little Mac is once again the only Punch-Out!! fighter in the game, and not being one of the eight starting characters from the original Super Smash Bros. he's unlockable.

Like all other unlockable characters, he can be unlocked by either having him join the party in World of Light, playing enough VS matches, or clearing Classic mode with specific characters. Specifically, Little Mac is the 20th character unlocked playing VS Matches, and the third in Mario's Classic Mode unlock tree.

Little Mac has received some alterations comparable to other fighters. One of the most notable being similar to Wario from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, his alternate costumes have been reduced in half from the prior game. His normal set has removed the blue and orange outfits, while his wireframe set only keeps his standard and sweatshirt outfit. The red costume has been renamed to blue, as the confusion is avoided. His K.O. Uppercut has been adjusted where he will leap upwards while his front/back faces the camera before instantly returning to the ground, which makes it more closely resemble the Star Punch from the original Punch-Out!!. Finally, his Final Smash has been changed to Giga Mac Rush. Even though he changes into Giga Mac like the previous game, his only actions are to rush forward, and send a barrage of rapid punches if his rush attacks an opponent before launching.

His Classic Mode is called "Friendly Sparring", and all his opponents are close-range brawlers while the only item available is the Sandbag. He even fights against himself in Round 5. His final boss is Master Hand.

Boxing Ring[]

Both versions of the Boxing Ring stage from previous games return in Ultimate. The stages are mostly unchanged, save for graphical enhancements. The stage names for those who were not in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U are added; while Link's, Kirby's, King Dedede's, Mega Man's, and Ryu's North American stage names have been changed. Charizard also loses his unique stage name, which is replaced by Pokémon Trainer’s. To learn about these additions and changes in the wiki, go to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sections in link pages that features one of these conditions.

Spirits[]

The game features 14 spirits from the Punch-Out!! series. Most of them are unlockable in Spirits mode, either in Adventure Mode or the Spirits Board, where the player must win in a fight with specific conditions, simulating a fight against the spirit's character. Every spirit fight for this series is a stamina battle in Boxing Ring, a reference to Punch-Out!!'s mechanic to attack the opponent until the health is completely drained. Alternative unlock criteria are indicated when available. Most spirits can also be obtained as random rewards or by purchasing them from the in-game shop; this is only listed when it's the only way to unlock the spirit.

Fighter Spirits usually come in two alternative artworks, one based on artwork from the character's original series, and the artwork from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate itself; only the original series artwork is shown here.

Music tracks[]

The game features 5 Punch-Out!! tracks, which are all tracks returning from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U. All of these tracks are available from the start, with the exception of “Minor Circuit (Original)” which is unlocked by unlocking the gym from defeating the Doc Louis sprit battle, and are playable in Boxing Ring. Update to Ver. 8.1.0 on August 4, 2020 allowed any of these tracks to be played on Battlefield, Small Battlefield, Big Battlefield, and Final Destination stages.

Little Mac's victory theme also returns unchanged from the previous game, but it's not available in the Sound Test and are therefore not listed here.
