In the town Petalburg a young Toad says:
- Hey, what's up? I gotta say, I'm really hooked on playing GBA games lately...
- There's this one game that just absolutely rules. It's called "Fire Emblem"...
- You ever heard of it? Man, it ROCKS MY SOCKS!!!

Four of the unlockable costumes that Mario can wear in the game by using a Mystery Mushroom are based on characters from the Fire Emblem series, specifically: Marth, Ike, Lucina and Robin. They are all original 8-bit designs based on their appearances from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, and when worn they replace the sound effects with sounds from Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light. All four costumes can alternatively be unlocked by using the respective amiibo from the Super Smash Bros. series.
