Terry[]

SSBU Terry

The American protagonist of the Fatal Fury series was made available as DLC as the only fighter to the spinoff series of the game, as well as the company, SNK, as a whole. The default appearance is based on his appearance from 90s The King of Fighters games, alebit with graphical updates.
He enters the stage by jumping to the screen and then adjusting his hat, similar to the lane switching mechanic of the Fatal Fury games.

Since he originates from a traditional fighting game like Ryu and Ken, he always faces his opponent when fighting one-on-one and utilizes many move sets based on what he can do in many games that he appears in. Additionally, he is the only character to have two different side specials that depend on how he is facing. The fact that both are assigned the same role of a side special but have different button variations is a reference to how they have nearly identical inputs across most of the Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters series. His move set consists of:

  • Neutral attack - Jab, Body Blow, High Kick: A jab, followed by a short straight-punch, followed by a side kick. They are based on his standing light punch, close-range standing heavy punch, and standing light kick in most games respectively, with the second attack dealing two hits much like in the original games.
  • Forward tilt - Middle Kick: Terry performs a mid-range roundhouse kick, which is based on his standing heavy kick in his home series.
  • Up tilt - Rising Upper: Terry performs a quick uppercut based on the one from early Fatal Fury and later The King of Fighters games.
  • Down tilt - Under Kick: A crouching, Hapkido-style shin kick based on his crouching light kick in his home series.
  • Dash attack - Power Charge: Terry performs a shoulder block. Based on Terry's special move introduced in Real Bout Fatal Fury Special.
  • Forward smash - Backspin Kick: A spinning kick with high KO power based on his C+D attack, albeit with a heavily altered animation.
  • Up smash - Wild Upper: Terry squats and then rises up to throw an uppercut. It is based on the command normal crouching heavy punch.
  • Down smash - Slide Kick: A modified version of the martelo de chão, a kick in capoeira that is similar to Ryu's down smash for only kicking in front of him. It is based on his crouching heavy kick.
  • Neutral aerial - Chop: Terry performs a downward knife-hand strike with quick frame rate that is based on his jumping light punch.
  • Forward aerial - Jump Kick: Terry performs flying kick with good horizontal range that is based on his jumping light kick or jumping heavy kick when jumping forward or backward in his home series.
  • Back aerial - Jump Backward Kick: Terry performs a spinning hook kick with solid horizontal KO power that is
  • Up aerial - Somersault Kick: A bicycle kick with low ending lag. Although Masahiro Sakurai mentioned that this move was made to fill in a move slot for Terry in Ultimate, it nevertheless appears to be based on Kim Kaphwan's Hienzan from Fatal Fury 2.
  • Down aerial - Jump Karate Kick: Terry performs a downward-angled cross with a meteor effect if sweetspotted that is based on on his jumping heavy punch.
  • Dodge attack: This is a unique fighter ability reserved for Terry. Pressing the attack button immediately after performing a spot dodge will make him perform a counterattack. This is inspired by the Fatal Fury series' two-plane mechanic, which allows fighters to shift between the foreground and background, with an attack that sends them back into the main plane. It is also similar to the mechanic from the Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters series where players can perform an attack out of a block (or an opponent changing lanes into the player's) with a certain input mechanic; it also includes the one from The King of Fighters series which allows fighters to perform a quick dodge, which can quickly be acted out of. In both of the latter instances, the same animation is used for the attack as the Dodge Attack in this game.
  • Pummel: Terry performs a short-straight punch, based on the first hit of his Grasping Upper from The King of Fighters '96.
  • Forward & Back throw - Buster Throw: The seoi nage, a Judo throw. Based on his signature throw in the Fatal Fury series. The forward throw is a mirrored version of that attack.
  • Up throw - Grasping Upper: An uppercut, based on a grab he was given in The King of Fighters '96.
  • Down throw - Neck Breaker Drop: A neckbreaker slam, based on a command throw in Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition.
  • Neutral Special - Power Wave: Terry slams his fist into the ground, creating a burst of energy that travels across the stage. If used in the air or at the edge, Power Wave will instead be a burst of energy that covers a small distance around him. The Power Wave has been his special move since the original Fatal Fury.
  • Forward Special - Burning Knuckle: Terry lunges towards his opponent with an energy punch while shouting "Burn Knuckle!", "Burn!" or "Burning!". This side special is preformed when the control is shifted towards the direction of the opponent. If the player performs a quarter circle with the control stick from down to the direction facing, the move becomes stronger with subtle green-yellow trails added to the blue energy flames. The Burning Knuckle is based on his special move since Fatal Fury: King of Fighters.
  • Back Special - Crack Shot: Terry jumps and spins his body with his extended leg while shouting "Crack Shoot!" or "Kick back!". This attack hits twice: The first hit occurs while Terry's foot is being brought from the back and then spun upward and is a semi-spike, intended to draw fighters into the stronger second hit, which occurs once Terry drops his leg and sends opponents on a more vertical trajectory. This side special is preformed when the control is shifted away from the direction of the opponent. If the player performs a quarter circle with the control stick from down to the direction away, the move becomes stronger. The Burning Knuckle is based on his special move since Fatal Fury: King of Fighters.
  • Up Special - Rising Tackle: Terry flips onto his arms and propels himself upward, performing an upward corkscrew kick and hitting five times in the process. Terry yells "Rising Tackle!", "Hee-yah!" or "Bingo!" while using the move. He will perform an enhanced version of the move, which hits nine times instead of five, if the player holds the control stick for 24 frames, then input the attack, he will perform an enhanced version of the move. Rising Tackle is Terry's anti-air attack since the original Fatal Fury.
  • Down Special - Power Dunk: Terry tilts his cap backward before leaping into the air, hitting twice with his knee while taking the opponent with him, and performs a downward-angled diving punch toward the ground before tilting the cap back. While performing the move, Terry says either "Power Dunk!" or "Beat up!". He will perform a stronger version of the move if the player performs the input: forward, down, forward-down diagonal, and attack. The Power Dunk is a move in Terry's repertiore since Fatal Fury 3 to show his love of basketball.
  • Super Special Moves: Terry can perform two Super Special Moves using command inputs when he is either at 100% damage in Stock or Time Battles, including Super Sudden Death, or he has less than either 30% of his starting HP or less than 100 HP, whichever is lower, in Stamina battles. Much like Real Bout Fatal Fury, they can be used indefinitely when the "GO" icon appears. However, neither move can be performed in the air.
    • Power Geyser: Terry punches the ground, unleashing a powerful geyser in front of him. The input is down quarter circle back, eighth circle downards, forward, and attack button; or down, back, down, forward, attack. This move has been Terry’s signature move since Fatal Fury 2.
    • Buster Wolf: Terry will rush forward with a shout of "Are you okay?". If the move connects with an opponent, Terry will fire a large explosion directly in front of him, shouting "Buster Wolf!" as he does so. The input is two quarter circles from downward to forward. This move is based on another of Terry’s signature moves, but was introduced in Garou: Mark of the Wolves.
  • Final Smash - Triple Wolf: Terry will shout "Overheat!" and release a move of three Power Geysers. If an opponent is hit by one of these geysers, gameplay will transition into a cutscene, where Terry will perform a Power Dunk, shouting "Slam!", before charging his fist up, declaring "Here's the big one!" and performing a cinematic Buster Wolf while shouting “BUSTER WOLF!!”. If multiple opponents are hit by the Triple Geyser, only the first one will be subject to the full combo. The initial move from the Final Smash, Triple Geyser, where it was a Super Desperation Move since Fatal Fury 3.

His name in the Boxing Ring stage is "The Legendary Wolf", referencing his official nickname in the games.

All of Terry's taunts feature different references of him. His up taunt has him gesture and say "Hey, come on, come on," to reference his taunt and intro pose in Fatal Fury 2 and The King of Fighters '94, his side taunt has him turn to the side and point to reference his victory pose from Garou: Mark of the Wolves, and his down taunt has him take his hat off and spin it with his finger to reference his match start animation for Fatal Fury 3: Road to the Final Victory and Real Bout Fatal Fury. As for victory poses, they are based on victory poses for his other games. One pose has him brushing his hat on his leg before putting it back on while the other two has him toss his cap and say "Okay!" The first one is based on his victory pose after his first win in a match since Real Bout Fatal Fury, while the other two are based on his victory pose for many other of his appearances, albeit the one where he breifly touches his nose in the beginning callbacks to the one from The King of Fighters '94 and The King of Fighters '95.

Terry's alternate outfits reflect the designs from his own games as the design of the cap changes: File:SSBU Terry palette.png

  • Red (default)
  • Blue: Resembles his standard alternate palette throughout the Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters series.
  • Brown: Resembles one of his alternate palettes from The King of Fighters 2002. His cap is blank.
  • Green: Resembles one of his alternate palettes from The King of Fighters 2002. Could potentially resemble Eri Kasamoto from the Metal Slug series. His cap is blank.
  • Orange: Resembles his early appearances from Fatal Fury: The King of Fighters to Real Bout Fatal Fury Special. The logo on his cap reads "NEO GEO", as in the earliest official artwork for his original design.
  • Grey: Resembles one of his alternate palettes from Fatal Fury Special onward. It also resembles "Heavy Punch" palette from The King of Fighter '98 and Kyo Kusanagi, the main protagonist from The King of Fighters series. The logo on his cap reads "KING OF THE FIGHTERS", as in Fatal Fury 3: Road to the Final Victory and Real Bout Fatal Fury.
  • Black: Resembles his alternate palette from Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition. His cap has a metal plate on the front, like his appearance in the Fatal Fury anime films. The material of his jeans is also altered to resemble leather rather than denim.
  • Yellow: Resembles his C+D alternate palette from The King of Fighters 2000. The logo on his cap closely matches the "Color 6" palette used in The King of Fighters XIV, which reads "SOUTH TOWN - HUNGRY WOLF".

Terry's Classic Mode is called "The King of Smash" and every round is a stamina battle against three opponents with a specific theme for each round (most of them being from the same series). This is a reference to the King of Fighters being 3-on-3 battles. The fights are specifically:

  • Round 1: vs. Mario, Peach, and Rosalina & Luma in King of Fighters Stadium. The background music is Ne! - KOF '94. Other than Mario, this is a reference to the women fighters in The King of Fighters '94.
  • Round 2: vs. Sheik, Link, and Zelda in Prism Tower (initial form). The background music is Let's Go to Seoul! - FATAL FURY 2. The music and stage reference Kim Kaphwan's stage from Fatal Fury 2.

  • Round 7: vs. Ryu, Ken, and Terry in King of Fighters Stadium. The background music is Art of Fighting Ver.230000000.0 - FATAL FURY SPECIAL. The music refers to the "Dream Match" from Fatal Fury Special against Ryo Sakazaki, one of the first crossover character appearances in fighting games. The battle references the three characters in Ultimate that come from traditional fighting games, as well as the previous crossovers between Street Fighter and Fatal Fury within the Capcom vs. SNK games.

Spirits[]

The game features 12 spirits from the SNK games (including 5 from Fatal Fury) after unlocking the fourth challenger pack. Most of them are unlockable in Spirits mode through DLC Pack, where the player must win in a fight with specific conditions, simulating a fight against the spirit's character. Alternative unlock criteria are indicated when available. Most spirits can also be obtained as random rewards or by purchasing them from the in-game shop; this is only listed when it's the only way to unlock the spirit.

Fighter Spirits usually come in two alternative artworks, one based on artwork from the character's original series, and the artwork from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate itself; only the original series artwork is shown here.

Terry also get a new victory fanfare. It is a remix of "Results Are Everything", the theme that plays at the end of a battle in Fatal Fury: King of Fighters. However, it's unavailable in the Sound Test and is therefore not listed here.

  • Psycho Solider Theme (Japanese Version): The remix of the first level/credits theme from Psycho Soldier, a side-scrolling platformer from SNK. This version uses the Japanese lyrics from the song's single release. • Psycho Soldier Theme (Overseas Version): This is the aforementioned remix of the first level/credits theme from Psycho Soldier, only with English lyrics, for the first time since the original game's release. Since the English version has fewer verses than the Japanese version, the second verse is replaced with a saxophone solo, and the third verse is a reprisal of the first verse.
  • ART of FIGHT - Art of Fighting: A remix of a major theme from Art of Fighting. The remix keeps the original's bass-focused approach, but uses traditional Japanese instruments like shakuhachi and shamisen.

  • Gaia - SAMURAI SHODOWN: This is a remix of Earthquake's stage theme from Samurai Shodown. Like the original, the remix primarily focuses on electric guitars and synthesizers, but also incorporates a guitar solo and a refrain with more traditional Japanese instrumentation.
  • Main Theme from Metal Slug - METAL SLUG: This is a remix of the main theme of Metal Slug, a side-scrolling run-and-gun series from SNK. The arrangement combines the bombastic, orchestral arrangement of the original song with a more rock-inspired approach, replacing its saxophone solo with a synth solo.
  • Assault Theme - METAL SLUG 1-3: A remix of the theme used in the first Metal Slug game during the boss fights with Hairbuster Riberts in Mission 2 and Mission 3, and the final boss fight with General Morden and his Hi-Do helicopter. It was also used in later games: the boss fight against Dragon Nosuke and first area of the Final Mission themes in Metal Slug 2, and the outer factory route in Mission 3 and the Hi-Do and fake General Morden boss fight in Metal Slug 3.
  • Final Attack - METAL SLUG 1-6: This is the final boss theme of several Metal Slug games. It is used during the first part of the final mission in Metal Slug, the battle against Rugname in Metal Slug 2, the battle against RootMars in Metal Slug 3, the battle against the Avatar of Evil in Metal Slug 5, and the final mission in the Invaders' underground nest in Metal Slug 6. This particular version is the arranged remix from Metal Slug 5.
  • Judgment - METAL SLUG 2: This is the first mission theme taken directly from Metal Slug 2.
  • Blue Water Fangs (The Island of Dr. Moreau) - METAL SLUG 3: This is the first mission theme taken directly from Metal Slug 3.
