R.O.B. in the American version of Mario Kart DS.

R.O.B., called with its code "HVC-012" in Japanese, is featured in Mario Kart DS as an unlockable racer in the Heavy category. It's unlocked by winning every cup in the Nitro Grand Prix (150cc Mirror) earning Gold trophies in each. Its color scheme is the same of the respecting region, being white and red in Japan and dark and light grey in North America, however both schemes are present in the game code of all versions, since the alternative R.O.B. can be seen while racing on-line against people from the other region.

His logo is the cross-shaped directional pad from the NES controller.

His basic original kart is the ROB-BLS (possibly short for ROB-Blocks), that's basically his Stack-Up configuration on wheels.

His other unlockable kart is the ROB-LGS (likely short for ROB-Legs), an original onfiguration made to resemble legs on rollerskates. Like all third karts, it's unlocked by getting a Gold Trophy on every cup in Nitro Grand Prix on 100cc.

Note that both kart's colors change depending on the region, to match R.O.B.'s colors.

R.O.B. costume

One of the unlockable costumes that Mario can wear in the game by using a Mystery Mushroom is based on R.O.B., and it's unlocked in the 100 Mario Challenge mode or alternatively by using the R.O.B. amiibo from the Super Smash Bros. series. Just like the amiibo, the costume comes in two variants, depending on the region, with red arms and base for the Japanese version and dark grey arms and base for the western versions. When collected, the "Phase Begin" sound effect from Gyromite can be heard.

Copyrights for both series are held by Nintendo.
