Playable characters[]

Castlevania introduces two new fighters, Simon and Richter Belmont. However, as the latter is a clone of former, Richter is considered an "Echo Fighter", and can therefore share the same spot on the character select screen depending on the settings.

Since no Castlevania character is among the eight starting characters from the original Super Smash Bros. they all need to be unlocked by either having them join the party in Adventure Mode: World of Light, playing enough VS matches, or clearing Classic mode with specific characters.

Simon[]

File:SSBU Simon.png

The third Belmont to kill Dracula from Castlevania debuts as an unlockable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He's the 18th character unlocked playing VS Matches, and the third character in Link's Classic Mode unlock tree. His default appearance is based on his render in Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls.

He's overall a powerful fighter with a vast arrange of weapons, albeit with poor recovery. His moveset combines elements from his and Richter’s appearances. His most notable moveset comes from his whip, the Vampire Killer, which is part of his unique gameplay from his neutral and forward tilt: the Whip Twirl. Holding the attack button after performing neutral attack or forward tilt will cause Simon or Richter to dangle his whip in front of himself. It can be controlled manually to strike nearby opponents or cancel out weak projectiles. This special attribute is based on the attack in Super Castlevania IV. The Vampire Killer also has a sweet spot and the tip and tether grab ledges. He also performs the Ritcher’s Slide for his Down tilt and Blade Dash for his dash, both being from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, as well as his Jump Kick ability both Richter and he can learn in Castlevania: Harmony of Despair for his down aerial.

Special attacks:

  • Neutral Special - Axe: Simon throws an axe at a high arc that can pierce through the opponent and go through the ground. The axe is a basic sub-weapon that acts similar to how it does in the Castlevania games.
  • Side Special - Cross: Simon says “Begone” and throws a boomerang like weapon in the shape of a cross that travels horizontally and pierces opponents, but it always comes back at the opposite even if he jumped. The cross is a sub-weapon that acts similar to how it does in the Castlevania games.
  • Up Special - Uppercut: He jumps up and moves slightly forward while raising his Vampire Killer upwards. Although he has not utilized this in games where he’s playable, this move is based on what Richter can preform in Symphony of the Night.
  • Down Special - Holy Water: Simon throws a bottle of holy water diagonally downward. When it lands or hits an opponent, it creates a pillar of fire that traps opponents in flame damage for a bit with little knockback. The bottle can also be caught by an opponent. The move is a sub-weapon with the color aspect being similar to its appearance in Super Castlevania IV.
  • Final Smash - Grand Cross: Simon summons a large coffin to trap opponents in. If successful, the scene moves to a graveyard resembling of Super Castlevania IV, where he grabs the coffin with his whip while saying “Away”, and swings it in an arc before launching it to the sky. He then hunches over before flexing powerfully back with his chest pushed upward and his arms bent, exclaiming "Grand Cross!" as a number of magical crosses made of energy erupt from the ground and batter the coffin holding the opponents. While Simon has only been able to preform the move in Castlevania: Judgement before, this technique has been used with Ritcher since Rondo of Blood.

In Boxing Ring, his stage name is “Evil-Whip-Wielding Bane”, referencing his primary weapon that he uses to fight enemies.

Two of Simon's taunts and all of his victory poses are different references for the Castlevania franchise. The side taunt has him end in a pose that he strikes before battling in Castlevania Judgement while his down taunt has him whip Vampire Killer on the ground similar, referencing the opening to Super Castlevania IV. As for the victory poses, one pose has him say "I vanquish the darkness!" when winning against players who aren't villains or associated with darkness, a possible reference to the prompt in Castlevania II: Simon's Quest that says "The morning sun has vanquished the horrible night," during the end of nighttime. Another pose has him hold the coiled Vampire Killer in the air before lashing it out against the ground while, ending in a pose similar to his promotional art in Castlevania Chronicles. Finally, there is a pose that involves him grabbing a Magic Crystal, a special item in the Castlevania series, as he continuously whip and jump as the camera cuts to a side view, referencing a phenomenon when the A and B buttons are held after collecting an orb in the original Castlevania.

Alternate outfits: File:SSBU Simon palette.png

  • Brown (default)
  • Red: Resembles his appearance from Castlevania II: Simon's Quest.
  • Yellow: Resembles his appearance on the Western boxart for Super Castlevania IV. It also resembles Fake Trevor in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
  • Black: Resembles his appearance in the Arrange Mode of Castlevania Chronicles and his in-game appearance in Vampire Killer.
  • Blue: Resembles his appearance on the Japanese boxart for Super Castlevania IV, as well as Richter.
  • Purple: Resembles Cornell from Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness.
  • Orange: Resembles his in-game appearance in Castlevania.
  • Indigo: Resembles Hector from Castlevania: Curse of Darkness.

Simon's Classic Mode is called "Smash-vania", and most of the opponents are monstrous beasts that reference the enemies from the Castlevania series. The fights are:

  • Round 1: vs. King K. Rool and Incineroar (White) in Dracula's Castle (Battlefield form). The background music is Vampire Killer. This is a reference to either The Creature and Flea Man from the original game or Minotaur and Werewolf from Symphony of Night.
  • Round 2: vs. Giant Ridley in Luigi's Mansion (Ω form). The background music is Out of Time. This is a reference to the Giant Bat from Castlevania.
  • Round 3: vs. Bayonetta and Dark Pit in Umbra Clock Tower. The background music is Bloody Tears / Monster Dance. This is likely a reference to Carmilla and her servant from Rondo of Blood.
  • Round 4: vs. Charizard (Blue) and King Dedede (Green) in Kalos Pokémon League. The background music is Beginning. This could be a reference to either Leviathan and Cyclops from Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse.
  • Round 5: vs. Bowser, Ganondorf, and Mewtwo in Reset Bomb Forest. The background music is Simon Belmont Theme (The Arcade). This can be a reference to the bosses Slogra, Gaibon, and Death from Super Castlevania IV.
  • Round 6: vs. Richter in Dracula's Castle. The background music is Divine Bloodlines. This can be a reference to Richter being brainwashed in Symphony of the Night.

The final boss is Dracula.

Richter[]

File:SSBU Richter.png

Richter, the latest Belmont to claim the Vampire Killer before the Morris Clan claimed it, debuts as an unlockable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, although only as an Echo Fighter of Simon. He's the 35th character unlocked playing VS Matches, and the seventh character in Link's Classic Mode unlock tree. His default appearance is based on his render in Castlevania: Rondo of Blood.

In Boxing Ring, his stage name is “Azure Vampire Assassin”, referencing how the Belmonts are a family of vampire hunters who try to kill Dracula and the color of the robe he wears.

Being Simon's Echo Fighter, he shares most of the same moves with only minor differences in aesthetics and words he says (he says “Go!” when using Cross and says “Now” when trapping opponents in the coffin for Grand Cross). The only notable difference with Simon that when using Holy Water, it gives an aura effect instead of flaming effect. Besides having its color change to blue, matching the color from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night as well as him saying “Take this!”, this replaces the effect that would normally have the Red Pikmin be immune to flames, causing the aura to damage it. However, this does remove the effect of exploding the bombs on contact.

All of Richter's taunts references artwork involving Rondo of Blood. His up taunt has him hold up his fist like his appearance in the game's boxart, his side taunt has him hold the Vampire Killer with both hands like his appearance in the guidebook, and the down taunt has him tighten his gloves like his appearance in a cutscene of the game. The up and side taunt are also featured in two of his victory poses. Additionally, the one similar to the side taunt has him say "You don't belong in this world!" which is what he said in the beginning of Symphony of the Night. The other pose has him pull back and roll up the Vampire Killer on his side and then turns his head and makes a parting gesture as the back faces the camera. The stance he poses is similar to his idle stance in Symphony of the Night, with the parting gesture referencing the cutscene where he rescues Tera in Rondo of Blood.

Alternate outfits: File:SSBU Richter palette.png

  • Navy (default)
  • Red: Resembles his ancestor Christopher Belmont as he appears in Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth and Juste Belmont from Harmony of Dissonance.
  • Purple: Resembles Richter's appearance from the unreleased SEGA 32X game Castlevania: The Bloodletting as well as Shaft from Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night.
  • Green: Resembles the "Curse" status-effect from Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and Castlevania: Dracula X. Also resembles the color scheme of Maria Renard as she appears in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. It’s possible to also resemble Annette from Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles.
  • Yellow: Resembles artwork for John Morris for Castlevania: Bloodlines. Also resembles Julius Belmont as he appears in Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow.
  • Blue: Resembles his design in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles.
  • Black: Resembles Alucard as he appears in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
  • White: Resembles Leon Belmont as he appears in Castlevania: Lament of Innocence.

Richter’s Classic Mode is called "Smash Echoes" and his opponents are Echo Fighters in numerical order of the characters they are Echo Fighters of. The final boss is Dracula, possibly to represent that he fights the same boss as Simon since all three are from the Castlevania franchise, even though Richter has fought Dracula before.

Dracula[]

File:SSBU Dracula 1stform.png

The main antagonist of many Castlevania games appears as a boss in Adventure Mode: World of Light, as well as in Classic Mode as Simon, Richter, Luigi, and Pac-Man's final boss, while serving as the fourth boss for Sephiroth. The fight seems to be based on the boss battle from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, so Dracula has two phases.

His first phase is based on his humanoid form, as he steps off the throne and into the stage. Like in his appearance in his other games, his weak spot is at the head and he can teleport in a beam of light. His attacks includes fire balls (including dark ones), magic orbs, fire pillars and a swarm of bats.

After the first phase is completely drained in health, Dracula regains his health and transforms into his green-winged demon form. While in this form, he can be hit anywhere from his body while also using a new series of attacks. These include spitting out ghosts, fireballs, and electric waves. He is also able to preform claw swipes, jump slams, and shockwave punches.

Dracula’s Castle[]

File:SSBU Dracula’sCastle.png

Dracula’s Castle is the only stage to represent Castlevania in the game, it's based on the end point of Castlevania games where the Belmonts fight Dracula.

Dracula's Castle features two platforms to the left and right that move up and down. All the way to the right side is a set of stairs whose bottom half is broken off. Candles in the background can be destroyed, dropping items. Each end of the stage is surrounded by the darkness.

Various boss characters also appear in the background of the stage with a stage entrance of how they appeared in their respective games. These include the Creature with Flea Man, Medusa, Mummy, Werewolf, Carmilla’s giant head form, and Death. Also when the moon disappears in the background, bats form shadows of either Dracula or Kid Dracula, in which the latter also appears occasionally in silhouette.

Death’s Scythe[]

File:SSBU DeathScythe.png

The recurring and powerful weapon for Death and used by some playable characters in the Castlevania series appears as a new item in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It works as a battering item and can KO opponents instantly depending on the damage dealt by opponent and the type of swing. Fully charged requires opponent at 70% minimum, not fully charged requires 80% minimum, and tilt requires 120% minimum.

Alucard[]

File:SSBU Assist Alucard.png

Alucard, the hybrid son of Dracula, makes his first appearance in Super Smash Bros. as a new Assist Trophy in Ultimate.

When summoned, he will say "Out of my way!" or "Suffer me!". He primarily uses the Crissaegrim, an extremely rare and powerful blade that has been recurring since Symphony of the Night. Similarly, only the sword slashes are visible when attacking rather than the sword itself being visible in motion, similar to the original games. He is also capable of using a transformation that lets him travel through certain walls and avoid attacks completely, a bat transformation that leads into the hard-hitting Wing Smash tackle, and both his jump kick and back dash techniques. However, he can be attack and K.O.'d.

Spirits[]

The game features 29 Spirits in the Castlevania series, including 1 from the Kid Dracula spinoff. Most of them are unlockable in Spirits mode, either in Adventure Mode or the Spirits Board, where the player must win in a fight with specific conditions, simulating a fight against the spirit's character. Alternative unlock criteria are indicated when available. Most spirits can also be obtained as random rewards or by purchasing them from the in-game shop; this is only listed when it's the only way to unlock the spirit.

Fighter Spirits usually come in two alternative artworks, one based on artwork from the character's original series, and the artwork from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate itself; only the original series artwork is shown here.

Music tracks[]

The game introduces 34 Castlevania tracks. 26 tracks are available from the start, while 8 tracks are unlocked as random rewards or by purchasing them from the in-game shop. All of these tracks can be played in Dracula's Castle. Update to Ver. 8.1.0 on August 4, 2020 allowed any of these tracks to be played on Battlefield, Small Battlefield, Big Battlefield, and Final Destination stages.

Simon and Richter also get a new victory fanfare. It is a remix of the stage clear theme from the original game. However, it's unavailable in the Sound Test and is therefore not listed here.

Base tracks:

  • Vampire Killer (Remix): This track is a remix of the first stage theme in the original Castlevania. The instrumentation and overall structure is largely similar to the orchestral metal approach of the Castlevania Judgment version, but the arrangement is extended and incorporates a portion not found in the original melody.
  • Vampire Killer ("Original"): Simon's theme, sourced from Castlevania Judgment, which itself is a remix of the first stage theme from Castlevania.
  • Starker / Wicked Child: This track is a remixed medley of the Stage 2 and Stage 3 themes from Castlevania. The first title is commonly referred to as "Stalker," with "Starker" being a rare mistranslation of the title.
  • Out of Time: This track is a remix of the music that plays during the Clock Tower stage in Castlevania. The song takes a similar orchestral metal approach to the soundtrack of Castlevania Judgment.
  • Nothing to Lose: A remix of Dracula's first phase boss theme from Castlevaniafrom Castlevania: Harmony of Despair.
  • Bloody Tears / Monster Dance: This track is a remixed medley of the daytime and nighttime themes from Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. It uses an orchestral metal approach, particularly incorporating a harpsichord and pipe organ for the "Bloody Tears" segment and a choir for the "Monster Dance" segment.
  • Cross Your Heart: This track is a remix of the music used for first stage of Haunted Castle, an arcade remake of the original Castlevania. The arrangement is similar to the Castlevania: The Arcade remix of the song, but includes a choir and an additional guitar solo.
  • Can't Wait Until Night: A remix from Castlevania: Harmony of Despair based on Julius Belmont's theme from Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, which itself is a remix of the final stage theme from Haunted Castle; it also contains "Heart of Fire" from the original Castlevania.
  • Beginning: This track is a remix of the theme used for Stage 1 of Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. The song's structure is based on its arrangement in Castlevania: The Arcade, but includes synth voices that emulate the sound of the original NES theme.
  • Aquarius: This track is a remix of the first song used in the Sunken City of Poltergeists stage in Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. While the overall piece is similar to the Castlevania: Harmony of Despair version of the song, it includes original aspects, such as an electric guitar-focused refrain.
  • Simon Belmont Theme (The Arcade): A remix from Castlevania: The Arcade based on the theme played during the first stage and the final boss from Super Castlevania IV.
  • Divine Bloodlines: This track is a remix of the theme that plays during the first stage of Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, albeit with many alterations. It combines aspects of the various remixes of the original track from throughout the Castlevania series. The overall format this remix follows is based on the Portrait of Ruin version, "Bloodlines Bequeathed".
  • Dance of Illusions: Dracula's theme, sourced from Castlevania Judgment, which itself is a remix of Dracula's boss theme from Castlevaia: Rondo of Blood.
  • Iron-Blue Intention: This track is a remix of the song used in Stage 4 of Castlevania Bloodlines. It takes an orchestral approach and primarily features a pipe organ for its main melody, while also including a modern drumkit and electric bass.
  • Dracula's Castle: Alucard's theme, sourced from Castlevania Judgment, which itself is a remix of the theme of the first area of Dracula's Castle in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
  • Dance of Gold: This track is a remix of the music used for the Alchemy Laboratory area in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Whereas the original song is a lushly orchestrated waltz, the remix introduces a heavy metal style that occasionally includes orchestral breaks mimicking the original.
  • Lost Painting: This track is a remix of the music heard in the Reverse Caverns, Anti-Chapel, and Forbidden Library areas in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night's Reverse Castle. The original song had an ambient, synth and pad-based melody with light percussion; the remix, meanwhile, is more of a trance-styled song that features electric guitar and rhodes.
  • Awake: This track is a remix of the song used in the Catacomb area in Castlevania: Circle of the Moon. The remix begins as a fairly faithful remaster of the original, orchestral song that incorporates faster-paced metal elements as it continues.
  • Ruined Castle Gallery: A remix from Castlevania: Harmony of Despair based on the Castle Corridor from Castlevania: Aria of Shadow.
  • Lament of Innocence: This track is a remix of Leon Belmont's theme from Castlevania: Lament of Innocence. As with the original, the song is a hybrid between a realistic orchestra with a techno-style bass and drumline, as well as incorporating a female vocalist. A later segment of this track features a reprise of Dracula's theme from Super Castlevania IV.
  • Jet Black Incursion: The theme of the first stage from Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow.
  • Crash in the Dark Night: A remix from Castlevania: Harmony of Despair based on a boss theme from Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow.
  • Ripped Silence: A remix from Castlevania: Harmony of Despair based on a boss theme from Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin.
  • Hail from the Past: The theme of Sandy Grave, sourced from Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin.
  • Twilight Stigmata: A remix from Castlevania: Harmony of Despair based on the theme played in the opening movie and in the entrance of Dracula's Castle from Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia.
  • Jet Black Wings: A remix theme from Castlevania: Harmony of Despair that plays in certain parts of Dracula's Castle in Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia.

Unlockable tracks:

Adventure Mode: World of Light features a couple of Castlevania references:

  • The Mysterious Dimension features various questions regarding spirit characters in the game, and the player must choose the right spirit in order to progress. One of these questions is "Which spirit fought alongside Alucard to defeat Dracula?" and the available spirits are Gabriel Belmont, Nathan Graves, Trevor C. Belmont, and Kid Dracula. The correct answer is Trevor C. Belmont, based on the events of Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse.
