Capcom Fighting All-Stars: Code Holders was the intended first entry in the Capcom Fighting series, cancelled due to negative reception following a brief location test in September 2002.

During the game's promotion no Darkstalkers character was ever confirmed for the game. In 2016, as part of a series of blogs revealing details about the game, Demitri Maximoff was confirmed to be one of two planned characters (alongside Street Fighter's Akuma) the staff was working on that weren't revealed before the game was cancelled. Official artwork for Demitri was released as well, although no further details on his in-game appearance or moveset were revealed.

Capcom Fighting Evolution (or Capcom Fighting Jam in Japan and Europe) was a "salvaged" version of All-Stars released following its cancellation, although it bears little resemblance to it, being a 2D fighting game with several different game systems. The game systems are 5 in total and determine the character's gameplay style, as they are based on previous fighting games by Capcom: Street Fighter II, Street Fighter Alpha, Street Fighter III, Darkstalkers and Red Earth. Each system is represented by 4 characters from the series.

Ingrid also appears as the only original character from Capcom Fighting All-Stars to survive the transition, fighting with a system exclusive to her.

Darkstalkers system[]

The Darkstalkers system is one of the more advanced systems in the game, taking several gameplay mechanics from Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors and Vampire Savior. Darkstalkers characters have a three-level gauge known as a "Special Stock" which allows them to perform both ES Moves (enhanced versions of normal moves) and EX Specials (the series equivalent of super moves). The system also includes the ability to perform air blocks and dashes, stand-up attacks, Guard Cancels (a counterattack off a defended move) and Chain Combos (the ability to chain together basic moves of equal or higher strength). Characters in this system are Anakaris, Demitri Maximoff, Felicia and Jedah Dohma, plus the game's final boss Pyron.

They all use their spriteset from Darkstalkers unaltered, and mostly the same lists of moves as well with some changes and omissions.

Stages[]

Underworld stage

Underworld stage

Although all stages in the game are original, there's one stage who appears to be directly tied to the series: the "Underworld" stage is set in a twisted rendition of a castle, presented in a style similar to the stages from the Darkstalkers series. It is possible the stage is also set in the Makai or Demon World, the series' main setting. The stage features three Darkstalkers cameos: Lord Raptor hanging at the top right side of the stage, B.B. Hood peeking out of one of the pillars at the right side and Jon Talbain hanging upside down from the ceiling at the left side. A portrait of Morrigan Aensland is also visible in the middle of the stage, perhaps indicating this is her castle.

There's also a cameo of the Chinese zombie Hsien-ko in the Hong Kong stage.

Capcom Fighting Evolution also features endings for each characters, obtained after defeating Pyron at the end of Arcade Mode. Endings are simple drawings in the style of comic book pages detailing a short event happening to the winning character. Felicia's ending in particular includes a large number of cameos from other Capcom franchises.

  • Ryu's ending has him facing off against Jon Talbain.
  • Pyron's ending includes appearances of B.B. Hood, Rikuo, Hsien-ko and Victor von Gerdenheim as they are about to fight the fiery entity.
  • Demitri's ending has him entering Morrigan's bedroom and facing her in battle.
  • Jedah's ending include small appearances of Q-Bee and some Red Earth characters, as well as Dante from Devil May Cry at the end, ready to fight him.
Felicia's ending

Felicia's ending

  • Felicia's ending has a large number of cameos from both Darkstalkers and other Capcom franchises, all dancing on stage with her. The full list includes:
    • Top-left panel: Felicia dancing with Yellow Iris from Battle Circuit.
    • Bottom-left panel: Felicia standing with R.Mika from Street Fighter.
    • Right panel: Felicia together with Elena (Street Fighter), Ele (Star Gladiator) and Rouge (Power Stone).
    • Bottom panel: A long line of characters behind Felicia, from left to right: Natsu Ayuhara (Rival Schools), June Lin Milliam (Star Gladiator), Cammy (Street Fighter), Tiffany Lords (Rival Schools), Akira Kazama (Rival Schools), Ibuki (Street Fighter), Yurika Kirishima (Rival Schools), Hinata Wakaba (Rival Schools), Tong Pooh (Strider), Lilith (Darkstalkers), Ayame (Power Stone), Q-Bee (Darkstalkers) and Effie (Street Fighter).

Midnight Bliss[]

Out-universe link: Capcom Fighting features minor references or similarities to elements from Ace o Nerae!, Gotcha Force, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Pocket Fighter

Midnight Bliss is a special move used by Demitri in which he captures his opponent and briefly turns him into something else before he drains them of their blood. The changed form varies but it usually turns males into females and females into "sexy" versions of themselves or in comical forms. Often the forms assumed by the characters are references to their series or other series, making a nod to a character's origins.

These transformations are considered Type 3 links because they are not meant to be the actual characters, but merely nods for the player to observe. As these links also happen as part of one of Demitri's signature moves, they can also be considered Undirect links to the Darkstalkers series.

Character Midnight Bliss form Information
Ryu Cfe midnight bliss ryu Ryu becomes a little indian girl holding a milk tank. This is based on a similar girl who is saved by Ryu in Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie.
Chun-li Cfe midnight bliss chunli1 Chun-li gets transformed into her appearance from the Street Fighter Alpha sub-series. The sprite is original and created for this game.
Cfe midnight bliss chunli2 Chun-li has a second, secret Midnight Bliss form that turns her into her appearance from Pocket Fighter, using one of her idle sprites.
Sakura Cfe midnight bliss sakura Sakura appears wearing a long red gym jacket and spats. This look for Sakura was first seen at the end of the Sakura Ganbaru! manga, and has since made appearances in mainline Street Fighter games.
Alex Cfe midnight bliss alex2 Alex normally gets turned into a female version of himself, but he has a second, rare version where he's transformed into his childhood friend Patricia.
Guy Cfe midnight bliss guy1 Guy's normal form turns him into a female by giving him Maki's sprite from Capcom vs. SNK 2 with his head swapped in place.
Cfe midnight bliss guy2 He has a secret second form which transforms him into Shadow Girl, a ninja bot from Gotcha Force.
Rose Cfe midnight bliss rose1 Rose's form has her appearing with a stripped shirt, blue pants and a hat, while holding a white mask and an oar. This form references Lisa Lisa from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure part 2, as she appears with this appearance when presenting herself to Joseph and Caesar. This is also a nod to Rose being originally designed after Lisa Lisa.
Cfe midnight bliss rose2 Rose has a second secret form which sees her transform into Enya Geil from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure part 3. The sprite is taken from the Capcom-made JoJo fighting game, but with its palette altered to match Rose's.
Karin Cfe midnight bliss karin Karin's Midnight Bliss form sees her turned into a tennis player with a pink outfit. This is based on the character Reika Ryuzaki from the manga series Ace o Nerae!. Much like Rose, this is also a nod to the fact the character inspired Karin's design.
